The Turbo Project

The Turbo Project is "Phase 3" for my MY04 MINI Cooper S. Phase 0 was stock, all 90 minutes of it. Phase 1 was a two year operation of basic engine bolt-ons, suspension tuning, and improved braking performance. Phase 2 was the "Lightweight Project" of removing about 300 pounds, which can be seen on MichiganMINI.org

The Turbo Project's goal was to find a practical performance limit of the stock long-block. A custom fabricated exhaust & manifold, front mount intercooler, fabricated intake tubing & throttle body adapter comprised the hardware. A UNIchip piggyback ECU helped control fuel and spark.

The initial turbo selection was a Garrett GT3071R. This turbo ended up being too large, with a boost threshold of 4k RPM, however @ 16PSIg & 11:1 AFR it yielded 263wHP. The later turbo selection was a Garrett GT2871R-15, which improved the boost threshold to 3700 RPM. In this configuration @ 22PSIg & 11:1 AFR, peak power was 318wHP @ 7k RPM. Street drivability was bi-polar, with minimal power off-boost and rapid at WOT on-boost. As such, around-town fuel economy averaged slightly north of 30MPG.
